Refill by Scan

The Refill by Scan feature allows users to scan the barcode on their prescription vials using their smart phones to directly place a refill request at the store. The process allows a user to quickly and easily place a refill request.

The Refill by Scan feature enables the user to scan the barcode printed on a prescription label or a receipt, using the smart-phone camera, to seamlessly order a refill.

Data format

Since mscripts uses the dispensing system’s services to process refill request,s the following data components must be included in the barcode. (Refer the table below for the types of supported barcode.)

McKesson

Rx#Storeidentifier (No space)

PDX

Rx#StoreNCPDPID

Generally the delimiter will be a comma or a space.

For example:

  • Rx#,StoreNCPDPID

      or

  • Rx# StoreNCPDPID
  • Ideally, the Store Identifier should be the Store NCPDP ID or a Store Identifier that can map to an NCPDP code. This mapping would need to be provided to mscripts if NCPDP values are not explicitly used in the bar code.

  • The pharmacy can alternatively choose to provide an alternate identifier for the store as well. i.e. for #033, the pharmacy chain may choose to use 033 instead of the NCPDP, if required. Please note that the store identifier type selected would have to be same for all stores in the chain. i.e. all stores in the chain would either use NCPDP in the barcode or an alternate identifier.

If the barcode data scanned doesn’t comply to the data standards as agreed with the pharmacy, the user is informed about this and presented with the option to type the RX and request the refill.

The minimum recommended size for a QR code is .65 x .65 inches for readability and support across most platforms. All label designs should attempt to minimize curvature or labels that may cause the bar code to be attached and cause readability issues.
